Palliative medicine is a newly developed medical speciality in MGUMST. NMC has recently approved 3 postgraduate seats for the year 2021-2022. The department is also ESMO accredited as an integrative centre for oncology & palliative care.
The goal of palliative care is to relieve suffering and provide the best possible care to the patients and their families with primary focus on improving quality of life without treating the disease itself.
The department provides specialized care to individuals with serious life limiting illness, due to cancerous and non cancerous causes. (Heart failure, Renal failure, ESLD, ESRD) and End of life care to patients in need.
The department provides relief from pain and other distressing symptoms (shortness of breath, fatigue, constipation, nausea, loss of appetite) caused by disease itself or associated with medicines used for treatment.
Palliative Medicine department works together with the patients, their families and other allied health practitioners (nurses, dieticians, psychologist, physiotherapist and counsellors), so that everyone is on the same page. The department has also facility of social worker who provides counselling to not only patients but their family members too.
The department also provides Home care & Hospice care to the patients in need.
