The Department of Pharmacology was established in the year 2001 with the teaching of 100 MBBS students. Since then, in the last 2 decades, the department has evolved with now teaching 250 MBBS and 4 MD Pharmacology students annually. The department also offers PhD & M.Sc., (Med.) Pharmacology. Apart from regular teaching and training of undergraduate and postgraduate medical students, the department also undertakes teaching and training of dental, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and various B.Sc. allied health sciences courses students.
Pharmacology consists of both the experimental (basic) and clinical sciences. Experimental pharmacology is essential to understand the drug action in diseases as well as for the pharmaceutical industry for drug discovery and development. Clinical pharmacology is essential for promoting rational drug prescribing practices in medicine, clinical trials and pharmacovigilance.
We have state of the art lecture halls, demonstration rooms, museum and labs equipped with LCD projector with LCS. Computer Assisted learning Lab & Clinical pharmacology lab developed with a capacity of 75 students at a time. Computer Assisted learning Lab equipped with 60 computers with Ex-Pharm series software for teaching experimental pharmacology skills. Clinical pharmacology lab equipped with mannequins for teaching various clinical skills like techniques of drug administration, IV drip setting etc. The central animal house attached to the department of pharmacology is registered with CPCSEA. Regular Institutional animal ethics committee meetings are conducted to facilitate animal research. Our department is also coordinating the pharmacovigilance activities of the institute. Faculties are well trained in Revised Basic and Advanced course in medical education and actively involved in training faculties of other departments in medical education.
